Term of the Week

Schlocky

Function: adjective

Definition: of inferior quality; cheap or shoddy. (from The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition. Houghton Mifflin Company, 2004)

Use in a sentence: Running out of time before the semester started, Brandon and his buddies signed a lease on a townhome that looked a little schlocky but was within their budget.

Mis-use in a sentence: A sequel to Hockey Dreams, Schlocky Team is a touching movie about a ragtag, down-on-their-luck group of hockey players who, after they work out their difference and learn to play as a team, finally beat their cross-town rival.

Use in an article: This week Professor Theophilus answers lots — and we mean lots of questions, including one in which the reader wants to know if they are "stumbling" by listening to non-Christian music. Theo tells the reader that just because a song has some religious words doesn't mean it's worth listening to. In fact, he says that "Some schlocky praise music makes me want to scream." How's that for direct? Check out the professor's answers to this and other questions in this month's installment of "Ask Theophilus."
